BOX, BRANCH, BUILD, WILL

William McIntosh found his freedom in a box. From that most maligned receptacle sprung a new world’s worth of passions.

As introspection stocks rallied during the world’s gap years William found himself as immersed in the universal disquiet as anyone else, grew several visions, forming the crest of a wave of heart based expression as it bloomed.

Pack Light

If you look up ‘wanderlust’ in the dictionary, you just might find the name Shanya Greene. For many years the designer has been an avid traveller. In the past two years alone she embarked on a nomadic journey spanning New York, Europe, Trinidad, and Bali. Her clothing brand, by SHANYA, formerly known as BagLady Basics, serves as a testament to her escapades. “When I travel I walk a lot. I want something that feels comfortable.” Even as we spoke, Shanya was somewhere else. While I looked out at the night sky, Shanya perched in her Sydney apartment where the day was still new.

SINCERELY VICTORIA TOM

APRIL, 2023 Victoria Tom creates clothes you want to live in. The composing of an essential ‘made in the Caribbean’ wardrobe. Clothes I’d wear daily. This idea of wearing anything repeatedly might sound like blasphemy in a time where it seems most fashionable to document every moment and outfit for a digital show. Still, Victoria […]

A LESSON IN SWIM

July 21, 2020 If you live on an island you know one thing is true: an arsenal of well cut swimsuits is essential. Whether it’s a family beach run (phase 4, please come soon), JAVA boat ride (yes, that term is here to stay), or, more recently, at home trying to survive the heat, there […]

IDLEWOOD CULTURE

October 07, 2019 Fashion is more than just an industry. It richly encompasses history, culture and heritage. It is a platform that expresses individuality and celebrates multiculturalism. THE BROWN COTTON GIRL STORY

October 26, 2018 Putting work out into the world to be judged is no easy task, but that’s the life we sign up for as artists and creatives. We think, we design, we make, we create, and then we publish, we exhibit. We have our creations walk the runways of life, all the while bracing […]

A CARIBBEAN FASHION LEGACY

January 14, 2017 “My competition, or your competition, is not a designer who stands next to you in Trinidad. My competition is not Claudia, or Heather, or Robert or an emerging designer. My competition is the world, the whole world.” I first met Meiling in 2009, while creating her folkloric wonderland of a website. It […]

THE MAKING OF TRINIDAD LOOKBOOK

February 26, 2016 “I wanted to talk about local fashionand local brands in a more inclusive way.In a way that would encourage young women like myself to invest in good local fashion.” A cool Saturday morning with fresh fruits, tea, toast and omelets, propped on a couch by the window in clear sight of the […]

MENSWEAR THAT SPARKS JOY

May 23, 2015 Fashion especially in the Caribbean has mainly been a female playfield. While menswear designers like Millhouse, Ecliff Elie and a few others have been carving their own niche it’s not generally an area most young fashion designers are attracted to, but in the last 10 years the fashionable man has been making […]
